Whether 用法
平日我們使用 whether 時，基於不同的情況，可分為數個使用方法
要正確使用 whether，必須牢記以下的whether的用法。
1. Whether 可表達不確定是那一個選項
難度：★★☆☆☆
文法重點：
– 使用時，必須加上『or 』來連接兩個選項
– Whether 只可以在句子中間使用
例子：
- My mother is thinking to buy whether red or green dress.
我的母親正在思索買紅色的還是綠色的裙子。
- I am not sure whether going Hong Kong or Japan next week.
我不敢肯定我會去香港還是日本。
3. I can’t decide whether to order pizza or sushi takeaway.
我不能決定要去叫烤雞還是壽司。
4. I don’t know whether he will come by train or by car.
我不知道他會坐火車還是汽車過來
2. Whether 表達決定是否要做一件事
難度：★★☆☆☆
文法重點：
– 使用時，必須加上『or not』，『or not』可以放在句子最後或是whether後面
– Whether 在這個用法只能放在句子的中間。
例子：
- I am not sure whether I will go to the party or not.
我不敢肯定我會否前往派對。
- Tom is deciding whether go camping or not.
湯姆正在決定會否前往露營。
3. I doubted whether to ask her about it or not.
我想知道是否要去問她。
4. The exam result suggests whether or not you should study more.
考試結果讓你想是否要溫習更多。
3. Whether 可作『不理會』或『不管』的意思
難度：★★★☆☆
文法重點：
– 使用時，必須加上『or not』，『or not』可以放在句子最後
– 可於句子的開頭或中間使用
– whether後半部的句子就是原因
正確例子：
- I will go travel whether my parent allow or not。
我仍會去旅行不管我的父母會否準許。
- Whether you eat it or not,I will cook congee tonight.
不管你會不會吃，我今晚還是會煮粥。
3. Whether he comes or not, the farewell dinner will be held on time.
無論他是否會來，歡送會都會如期開始。
4. Whether you like it or not, you will have to work on this project.
不論你是否喜歡，你都要去做這個專案。
4. 重覆別人的是、否問題（轉述句 reported speech）
難度：★★★★☆
文法重點：
– 只可在轉述是、否問題時使用
– 使用時，句子可加上『or not』（不加也可以）
甚麼是『是、否』問題？
『是、否』問題: 指只容許你回答是或否，對或錯的問題。
句子的開頭可以是:
- Be: is/am/are, was/were
- Do/does/did
- Have/has/had
例子：
Whether 可以在轉述句中這樣用，假設是Tom向你問問題：
例句：
- Tom：Are you hungry?
(V) Tom asked me whether I was hungry.
湯姆問我是否肚子餓了。
- Tom：Do you know Miss Chan?
(V) Tom asked me whether I knew Miss Chan.
湯姆問我是否懂得陳老師嗎。
- Tom：Have you eaten lunch?
(V) Tom asked me whether I had eaten lunch.
湯姆問我是否吃過了午餐。
常見錯誤：
在英文寫作時，有許多學生會把開放式的問題使用 whether 轉述。
開放式問題就是可以有無數個可能性的答案，有別於只能答Yes/No。
在以下的情況，開放式問題可以用WH 疑問詞來轉述
例如是: Who/What/When/Where/Why/How…
例句：
- Tom: Where do you live?
(X) Tom asked me whether I live.
(V) Tom asked me where I lived.
湯姆問：「你住哪裡？」
- Tom: What color do you like?
(X) Tom asked me whether color I like.
(V) Tom asked me what color I liked.
湯姆問：「你喜歡甚麼顏色？」

- I am not sure whether I can go back home.
